Why cohousing is good for people and communities – the evidence. Cohousing has been around for fifty years or more. However, it has only become a focus for action and research in Britain and Ireland in the last twenty years or so. Various arguments have been made for it. Here, four key claims and the evidence there is to support them are explored. They are that cohousing:

  • reduces social isolation and loneliness.
  • fosters agency, mutual aid, and well-being.
  • adds to the supply of affordable housing.
  • strengthens community life and a sense of place.
  • can have significant health benefits. [HCH 2022, 2024]

The education of informal educators (with Tony Jeffs). The article explores the emergence of informal education and highlights some key failings in the professional education of practitioners – and how they can be addressed. [Education Sciences 2021]

Ruth Kotinsky on adult education and lifelong learning. Building a life in common. Ruth Kotinsky made several important contributions to thinking about lifelong learning and welfare. Of particular interest was her exploration of adult education as an aspect of everyday life and working together to build a life in common. [infed.org 2021]

Pierre Bourdieu on education: Habitus, capital, and field. Reproduction in the practice of education. Bourdieu’s exploration of how the social order is reproduced, and inequality persists across generations, is more pertinent than ever. We examine some key lessons for educators and pedagogues. Richard Sennett: Class and the new capitalism, craftsmanship, cooperation and cities. Over 50 years Richard Sennett has contributed to our understanding of the experiences of class, capitalism and the life of cities – and our appreciation of Homo faber – humans as makers, users of tools and creators of common life. This piece reviews Sennett’s life and work and reflects on his achievements. [infed.org 2020].

Naomi Klein: globalization, capitalism, neoliberalism and climate change. Naomi Klein has probably done more than any other commentator, to raise public understanding of the relationships between capitalism, neoliberalism and climate change. This article explores her contribution. [infed.org 2020].

Marie Paneth: Branch Street, the Windemere children, art and pedagogy. Marie Paneth (1895-1986) was a talented painter, art therapist and pedagogue. Her book, Branch Street (1944) is a classic exploration of community-based work with children during the Second World War – and the healing use she made of art both with The Windemere Children (2020) and in later practice was pioneering. Her approach was based in pedagogy and an appreciation of therapeutic practice. In this piece, we explore her work – mostly in the 1940s – and continuing relevance. [infed.org 2020].
